After Dow sold some of its consumer product lines to S.C. Johnson in 1997, the product had to be rebranded, and took the name of its longtime "Scrubbing Bubbles" mascots, anthropomorphic bubbles with brush bristles on their undersides. In the 1970s, the popular commercials featured Paul Winchell, , as the voice of the leader of the Scrubbing Bubbles . In 1995, pranksters at MIT placed the Scrubbing Bubbles characters on the exterior glass on the side of the school's Media Lab building to celebrate the Media Lab's tenth anniversary.
