Hazel, the main character investigates after hearing rumors of a Russian spy who is lurking in her town of Maple Hill. She sets out to find out who this traitor is, she collaborates with the new smartest kid in her school Samuel Butler who she thinks will take her place as the smartest student in the school, they both investigate places such as Mr. Jones who is the caretaker of his parents’ cemetery, the events of this story were set in 1950. Traveling is assured with Brown Girl Dreaming. From Ohio, to South Carolina in the sixties to New York. this book is told in free verses telling to some extent the story of Jacqueline Woodson herself. It tells of the events she experienced growing into a writer who writes family stories in her own voice and version as they, the family moves to the south during unstable years. this book has won many awards such as National Book Award for Young People’s Literature in 2014 and Claudia Lewis Award for Older Readers in 2015.

If you children are fans of sports, this is one of the books you should have them read. Double Reverse by Fred Bowen is a book that tells the story of two young boys who will join the freshman football team who are in need of a quarterback, Jesse, our character stepped up to fill the place the only problem is that he does not look strong enough to be a quarterback. his brother Jay the best quarterback at college thinks he will be a good quarterback at Jesse’s school. The book is accompanied by notes that tells the names and a little introduction about real people who never thought they would fit into something but managed to and they were unbeatable in it.

Zane and the Hurricane: A Story of Katrina by Rodman Philbrick

 

A historical fiction that will make you live the events that are described in the book. The story of Zane and his dog starts with them traveling to smelly ville in New Orleans to see his great grandmother, after they arrived, the horror and chaos was about to begin as the storm was approaching and with that the tragic events unfolds. The weather prevented any means of communication for zane to call his mom, the flight lines were out of service so he couldn’t travel back, so they took shelter in the church in which they will be surprised when they will be told to evacuate. Events will later evolve when his dog run away and will result in Zane and the dog being surrounded by water, as not to burn the story more, make sure you pick up this book next time you drop by a bookstore or order it online.
